Document Interpretation 4
The election of 1800 was a race between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. The Federalists were afraid that Jefferson would transform America by changing Hamilton’s financial system and dismantling the army. Many people during this time were very worried about this election as it might mark a 28 year period of Republican rule. Ultimately, Jefferson won the election in 1800. In Jefferson’s First Inaugural Address he reflected on the “Revolution of 1800."He believed that the revolution was a fulfillment of the principles of when America declared its freedom from Britain. During the election time, both the Federalists and the Republicans were using a flawed voting system and political parties cheated to manipulate the system. Jefferson saw that as a problem and he discussed it in his First Inaugural Address. He stated that he will lead the nation with justice and everything will be equal for the people. Eventually, he hoped to shape the nation into a true Democracy that is for the people.
In the second paragraph of his speech, Jefferson said, “We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists”. I think this statement meant to express that despite the differences between the political parties, all the citizens were unite. Americans were committed and all shared a common ground. So, instead of focusing on the differences of the two parties, it was important to remember that both were serving the people in an effort to establish a strong nation.
Reflection #3
For this document interpretation, I did Jefferson’s first Inaugural address. Analyzing it enhanced my reading and comprehension skills. In order to better understand it, I had to spend some time researching and reading the course material to understand what was happening during the Revolution of 1800. Frankly speaking, this is the first time I have learned about the Revolution of 1800 in depth. It was a bit complicated to understand from both a political standpoint and systematic standpoint. I had to take some time to understand how voting works prior to the ratification of the twelfth amendment. After learning about it, I find it interesting to see how politicians quickly began to exploit the system and find ways to manipulate it in order to gain power and win the presidential race.
My goal for this assignment was to do it prior to the due date so I can thoroughly interpret it. After doing so and using the time to effectively research, I feel that I have learned more than I could if I procrastinated. In the future, I hope to comprehend the documents to the best of my ability and then connect those topics to present day political issues. This assignment really forced me to reflect some of the political issues we see today. For instance, the division of the house and the difficulty for the nation to reach a compromise. Even in everyday life power commit fraudulent act in order to obtain power or wealth. Overall, history shows that it seems to repeat itself.
