Dear future pathways students,
I am Yulian Dong. Most people know me as Sally. I'm currently a nursing major and I want to become a pediatric nurse. College is quite exciting, but at the same time scary for me. I heard from many people who described their college experience for me. Some people said that they enjoy college because of all the freedom they get. Others said that college is super stressful because of the overwhelming work. Due to their stories I had a few misconceptions. I now understand that I do have a lot of freedom in college ; however, I am on my own. There is no longer teachers who ensure that all their students do their homework. College students can procrastinate even more than high school teacher. If we procrastinate, we would really suffer during finals week. So, I suggest that you do not procrastinate!
In my College One class, I read a very interesting book called "Spare Parts." On golden line from the novel is "...were nothing but junk; nobody would want them.” This was describing the robot that the robotics team built. The team was able to use parts that other people didn't want to make a robot that was comparably better. Another quote is "In Phoenix, they were called illegal aliens and pegged as criminals. They were alternately viewed as American, Mexican, or neither. Now, for a moment, they were simply teenagers at a robotics competition by the ocean.” Due to robotics, the boys were able to forget all the burden and trouble they had. It showed how much they love robotics and how they can stay positive in difficult sitautions. These quotes inspired me to stay true to myself and pursue my passion. In addition to the novel, the author of the novel is also very inspiring. Joshua Davis, the author, came to PCC to tell us about his writing experience and how this book came about. After hearing his story, I felt more connected with the characters and the novel itself.
Team work is also very important in college. You need the social skills to go in to the work field and it helps you develop your social network. In order to successfully work in groups, everyone in the group must communicate with each other and be open minded. The most important part is that everyone must want to contribute to the team!
Two very useful resources that can help you are the TLC tutors and the library reference desk. The tutors and librarians will try their best to answer your academic questions. I visit them very often when I have trouble with home assignments or research related question. Just don't be shy and ask when you need help!
Good Luck!
