My reflection will be on the project #1: video analysis. We had to find a short video of our choice and provide a summary of it. Then, compare and contrast using the views of Comte, Marx and Durkheim. We had to thoroughly explain how each of the sociologist would interpret the video by using sociological concepts and identify which sociological paradigms was portrayed in the video. The clip I choose for this project is from the movie “A Bug’s Life.” It is about a colony of ants that is oppressed by a gang of grasshoppers. The video presented the conflict paradigm, which was characterized by struggle and tension between two groups.
Through this assignment, we had to utilize all the knowledge we had learned from the previous chapters and apply it in a very practical way. I think this assignment helped me reviewed all the terms and concepts I had learned from this class. It also encouraged me to view others videos and events using sociological ideas. Furthermore, it helped me study for other classes because I had to play close attention to details and connect different concepts together. The skill that I improved on by doing this project is creativity. Before, I didn’t know that a childhood movie can have so many sociological ideas and could relate to many topics we learn in school.
If I could change the way I did the assignment, I would add in more details and analyze the video more. I would be able to accomplish this by reading the text book more closely and doing research on the internet. In the future, I want to incorporate sociological ideas into my other assignments. In other words, apply what I learned from this class in others places.
